Dr. Robert Hargraves, LFTR Advocate

Dr. Robert Hargraves, LFTR Advocate

I first encountered Dr. Robert Hargraves' nuclear advocacy 6 years ago, when I was looking for support for an idea that I was developing. The idea was a partial solution to nuclear costs through factory construction of reactors.  Robert had posted some material on the Internet advocating the same idea and I stumbled on it.  At this point the Pebble Bed Reactor was still in the running for reactor of the century and Robert had suggested that among its' advantages was its' potential for factory construction. The REAL Fukushima Danger

The REAL Fukushima Danger

The Real Problem …

The fact that the Fukushima reactors have been leaking huge amounts of radioactive water ever since the 2011 earthquake is certainly newsworthy.  As are the facts that:
But the real problem is that the idiots who caused this mess are probably about to cause a much bigger problem.

Adopting a Low Carbon Energy System: How Four Nations Have Made the Switch

5032602590_d77d4f3c43_oClean energy has been a major topic of interest of late, but the pace at which major change has occurred has been frustratingly slow and it is often hard to see how a shift to low-carbon technologies could actually happen in practice. Fortunately, we are able to look abroad to a number of success stories that can demonstrate how major transformation in the energy sector might occur.

US expert: TEPCO should say more on water leaksA US nuclear expert has urged the operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant to do more to tell the world about leakage of radioactive water at the site.

Lake Barrett is a former official of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission who led cleanup work for 4 years after the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island.

Barrett took part in a meeting at Tokyo Electric Power Company on Friday to address problems including leakage from wastewater storage tanks and contamination of massive amounts of groundwater.

Press Releases 2013

Press Release (Sep 10,2013)Invitation of an External Professional, to the Contaminated Water and Tank Countermeasures Headquarters

On August 26 this year, we set up the "Contaminated Water and Tank Countermeasures Headquarters." Today, we have determined to invite Mr. Lake H. Barrett (former US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and former US Department of Energy), an overseas expert familiar with clean-up and decontamination technology, as an outside expert to the "Contaminated Water and Tank Countermeasures Headquarters."
Based on his international knowledge and experience, acquired by engaging in control of the Three Mile Island accident at the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, he will participate in the meetings of the Contaminated Water and Tank Countermeasures Headquarters and each project team, and will provide advice regarding decontamination issues such as contaminated water countermeasures at the request of TEPCO.
We recognize that bringing the contaminated water under control is the most urgent and serious issue that we must address. Supported by the Japanese government, and utilizing the immense amount of expertise provided by professionals around the world, all of us at TEPCO will strive relentlessly to rectify this issue.

Nuclear weapons: an accident waiting to happen

In July 1956, a plane crashed in Suffolk, nearly detonating an atomic bomb. In January 1987, an RAF truck carrying hydrogen bombs skidded off a road in Wiltshire. Other near-misses remain top secret. Who is really at risk from Britain's nuclear weapons?

Nuclear power generation in the United States is falling. After increasing rapidly since the 1970s, electricity generation at U.S. nuclear plants began to grow more slowly in the early 2000s. It then plateaued between 2007 and 2010—before falling more than 4% over the last two years. Projections for 2013 show a further 1% drop. With reactors retiring early and proposed projects being abandoned, U.S. nuclear power’s days are numbered.

This year, 5 students — Gordon Glober (UG), Alexandre Guion (G), Lauren Merriman (UG), Jude Safo (G) and the trip organizer, Katia Paramonova (UG), spent a week and a half in Russia. PennEnergy Research: Gas Development Reports and Industry Outlook

Gas Development Reports and Industry Outlook
Increased Shale Gas Production and Natural Gas Trading is Driving the Growth of Salt Cavern Type Underground Gas Storage Sites in the US
Summary
The scope of the underground gas storage industry in the US has increased due to the increased trading of natural gas and the commercial production of natural gas from shale plays. The increased trading of natural gas has given impetus to the development of salt cavern type storage sites, as these sites allow faster injections and withdrawals of natural gas than other types of storage facilities. Increased shale gas production in the country has resulted in massive pipeline capacity expansion plans, which will spur the development of the underground gas storage industry. The increased trading of natural gas is also expected to decrease the relevance of the depleted oil and gas field type sites, which accounted for approximately 82.6% of the total working gas capacity in 2011.

Scope
  • The report highlights impact of natural gas trading on the growth of salt cavern type underground storage sites in the US
  • The report discusses the relevance of depleted type storage sites in the US due to increased natural gas trading
  • The report highlights benefits of salt cavern type storage sites
