Nuclear Waste Storage Rules Thrown Out by U.S. Court

Nuclear Waste Storage Rules Thrown Out by U.S. Court

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission failed to fully evaluate the risks associated with regulations governing storage of spent nuclear fuel and must draft new ones, an appeals court ruled.
The commission’s conclusion that permanent storage will be available when needed in the future didn’t calculate how the lack of such a facility could affect the environment, the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington said. The commission also failed to fully assess the dangers of storing spent fuel on-site for 60 years after a nuclear plant’s license expires, the court said.
