Nuclear conversion plan could benefit U.S. military, TVA Mixed views on mixed oxides

The Energy Department's proposal to convert weapons-grade plutonium into mixed-oxide fuel for Tennessee Valley Authority's nuclear power plants is drawing mixed reactions. The plan could help take away 34 metric tons of excess plutonium from the military and offers low-cost fuel for TVA, proponents say. "We have not made any decision, but whatever TVA does, it will be done to help reduce our costs and to help meet these national goals," said T.A. Keys, TVA's manager of nuclear fuels.
